What support will I get?

Bournemouth University library at night

Studying as a part-time student does not mean you have to go it alone and we fully understand the extra commitments you will have to balance such as your job, family life and other responsibilities.

We are able to provide a full range of resources to help and support you through the various stages of your studies:

Academic Support and Facilities

myBU

is a flexible web-based system that is a central learning resource for many of our courses for health and social care professionals. We like to think of myBU as your own 'virtual' university campus, enabling you to access many of the learning resources you can find on campus, but without having to physically visit the campus. As this resource is purely online - you can access the resources at anytime of day or night, allowing you to balance your study commitments with other responsibilities (such as shift work etc.).

University Libraries

  • The main library for health and social care students is in Bournemouth House, at our Lansdowne Campus - this library has been developed to provide a variety of learning spaces and access to a wide range of print and electronic resources. In June 2009 the Library service was the winner of the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for 'Outstanding Library Team'.
  • In addition you are able to visit the Sir Michael Cobham Library, (at Talbot Campus, Wallisdown, Poole). Where additional study spaces, quiet areas and learning resources can also be accessed.

Hospital Libraries

In addition, there are a number of hospital based libraries, that depending on your place of work/job role, may be available for you to access. Full details can be found on our Library website.

Open Access Centres

If you have limited access to a computer or experiencing computer problems, you are able to visit our Open Access Centres. These centres (available at either campus) are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provide access to core university software, the internet and other library resources. So if you need to complete research for an assignment at 2am, we've got the facilities to let you do just that!

Personal Support

askBU

askBU provides a one-stop question-and-answer service for all Bournemouth University students.

Student Counselling Service

If you feel you are not coping well with your feelings or behaviour, then it is worth contacting the Student Counselling Service. It is free and sessions are offered by appointment (telephone appointments can be offered if necessary). The team have a wide range of experience in helping people through a variety of problems from exam anxiety to bereavement, vague worries and unhappiness, to problematic eating habits and drug problems.

Chaplaincy

All students of any or no faith are welcome to contact the Multi-faith Chaplaincy. There are three Chaplains available on campus to help you and in addition, two Jewish Rabbis (Reform and Orthodox) and a Muslim Imam are available on an on-call basis.

Students' Union

The Students' Union is available to represent, help and provide services to all students at BU.

Student Advice Centre

If there any concerns you have about student life then speak to our Student Advice Centre - they provide a free, independent, confidential advice service and representation for all students (from consumer matters to academic issues). They are available to visit on campus but also welcome phone calls, emails, letters etc.
